Policies

Alcohol and Drugs

The University of Evansville prohibits the possession, consumption, use or sale of unauthorized prescription drugs, illegal drugs or alcohol at any student campus activity or in any campus living units occupied by students, including University approved housing. This policy includes the possession of empty alcoholic beverage containers.

Each student is expected to respect the decision not to allow illegal drugs or alcohol in residential facilities. Students present in a residential facility where alcohol and illegal drugs are present are also subject to disciplinary action. Persons found in violation of this policy will be subject to disciplinary action, including possible expulsion from their residential assignment and the University.

Explosives and Weapons

The possession or use of firearms, ammunition or other lethal weapons which could inflict bodily harm, including knives, is strictly prohibited in residential facilities or on campus at any time. The possession or use of fireworks or any material which may create a fire hazard also is prohibited. Violation of these regulations will result in disciplinary action including possible expulsion from the University. Additional information is available in the Students’ Rights and Responsibilities.

Guests and Visitation

With the roommate’s consent, residents may have guests of the same gender stay in their rooms, providing the stay is no longer than three days within a 10-day period and that the guests do not disrupt the normal activities of the floor. Guest rooms are available when space permits. It is recommended that guests be registered with the resident assistant, residential coordinator or the Office of Residence Life. Guests are subject to all University and residence life rules and regulations. Students are responsible for the actions of their guests.

The room visitation policy on designated floors permits men and women students to meet socially in each other’s residence hall rooms on a limited schedule. Visitation is permitted Sunday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to midnight, and on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. There are also several 24-hour visitation floors available within each residence hall.

Guests must be escorted at all times by a host or hostess who is a resident of the hall.

Pets

Tropical fish are the only pets permitted in residential facilities. With the exception of seeing-eye dogs, all other animals, including lab specimens, are prohibited.

Quiet Hours

Community living in an academic setting requires that residents respect the rights of others to study and sleep. Primary quiet hours are from 10:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. The duration of quiet hours may be increased by vote of the residents and approval of the residential coordinator.

Each student has the responsibility to ask another to be quiet, close doors, turn a stereo down, etc. to maintain quiet hours.

During Reading and Study Day and finals week, residential facilities are under continuous quiet hours.

Smoking/Non-smoking Areas

All University residences are designated as smoke free facilities.  Smoking is allowed outside residential buildings, but within a reasonable distance (10-20 feet) where tobacco smoke cannot enter the building through entrances, windows, ventilation systems or other means. If smoke can be detected in nonsmoking interior areas, it is the responsibility of the individual who is smoking to move to a more suitable location.

The rights of non-smokers and smokers are a heavily debated and emotionally charged issue sweeping communities across the United States.  It is expected that all parties treat each other with respect and dignity at all times.  It is essential that we work through issues regarding smoking as a true community.

Solicitation

To protect residents from unreliable, illegal and meddlesome peddlers, soliciting is not permitted in the halls. Special permission for student fund-raising projects may be obtained from the dean of students. Residents should report any solicitation in the residence halls or Villages. Immediately notify your residential staff, the Office of Residence Life or the Office of Safety and Security.

Sports / Roughhousing

The University encourages positive social interaction and the ability to recreate within the residence halls.  However, any activity that poses potential harm to person or property has no place in a residential facility.  For this reason any sports or roughhousing that is likely to be harmful is not allowed within residential facilities.

Stereos

Stereos may be brought to campus and to rooms. However, the right of residents to study and sleep is more important than any right to play music. If you like your music loud, you may want to consider purchasing headphones.
