Severe Weather & Tornado Safety Procedures

The Office of Safety and Security monitors a weather alert radio at all times. students will be notified one of two ways:

  • Students in Residence Halls and North Hall will be notified by an IP telephone weather announcement.

  • Students in Village properties and Fraternity Houses are supplied with a community weather alert radio and should take appropriate action upon hearing a warning for the Evansville area.  For more information on your weather alert radio click here.

During severe weather, do not wait for notification by University staff to evacuate to a safe zone.  Tornados can strike with little or no warning and can travel at high speeds.  When in doubt it is always advisable to proceed to your building's safe zone.

Ways you can take responsibility for your own safety:

Severe Weather Sirens  If you hear severe weather sirens do not ignore them.  Tune into a local news station or weather channel to determine the nature of the alert and the level of risk. If there is a tornado warning for the area, you should proceed directly to your safe zone.

TV and Radio  Tune into local radio and TV broadcasts when weather looks severe.

Telephone Notification Services   Students can subscribe to a free severe weather notification service.  Think about subscribing to something like Thunder Call, offered by WFIE, one of our local television stations.

Where to Go   What to do!

Know your Safe Zones Several areas of the campus have been designated as shelter areas for emergency situations such as severe weather. Become familiar with these areas in case such emergencies arise.  Visit the Safety & Security Web site to access a list of campus shelter areas.

Tornados can sweep into an area swiftly and with little warning.  Being personally responsible for your own safety is key.  Upon being notified students should follow these tornado safety procedures:

Inside: Move to the safest area in the building. This will be on the lowest level of the hall. Clear stairwells as quickly as possible to avoid wind tunnel effects common in stairwells during tornados. Attempt to warn others and stay clear of glassed areas.

Do not evacuate the building unless fire ensues or until you receive an “all clear” from security or an approved residence life staff member. Stay away from windows, doors and outside walls. Protect your head.

Outside: If you are in a vehicle when you observe a tornado approaching, do not remain in the vehicle. If there is a sturdy structure nearby, go to the lowest level of the structure to obtain protection. If in the open, lie down in the lowest area possible. Be sure to move as far away from the vehicle as possible to avoid being struck by it.
